US FlagToday's federal holiday celebrates liberty from the oppressive and unfair treatment of American colonists from the King of England. Many communities commemorate today with fireworks, fairs, parades, picnics, and contests. How is your community celebrating today?

The Declaration of Independence is a founding document of our country written primarily by Thomas Jefferson and signed by fifty-six representatives of the thirteen colonies. Three of the signers were from New Hampshire (Josiah Bartlett, William Whipple, and Matthew Thornton). The preamble begins with these famous words, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."
